OUTPATIENT SURGERY ADDITION –
ELIZABETH CITY, NC

After evaluation of existing conditions of the 182 bed facility and recommendations for modernization followed a detailed financial analysis prepared by the Big Eight accounting firm of Ernst & Young.

Preliminary findings and in-depth architectural interviews with medical staff, department managers, and administration, the selected option proposed significant renovation and over 55,000 square feet of new construction.  Areas receiving majority of new construction and renovation included Outpatient Surgery, Labor and Delivery, Laboratory, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Central Sterile Supply, Dietary, Medical Records and conversion existing patient rooms to private beds.

Also included in new construction were an addition of 33 private-acute care replacement beds, Emergency Room, Radiology, Outpatient Lobby/Admitting, Administration and Nursery.  A significant feature of the design is the triangular nursing floor configuration with centralized nurse’s station and service core.  The new patient unit replaces existing beds lost in the conversion to private rooms and improves circulation by separating outpatient, visitor, emergency and staff traffic.  Future expansion capacity is provided by structuring for three additional floors above the new patient wing.
